Which Commercial Bond Do You Need?

The requirement letter names the bond. Match it below, or start the quote and a bond specialist will confirm it.

Licence and Permit Bonds

Guarantee a licensed business follows provincial or municipal rules. Needed by motor dealers, collection agencies, electrical and gas contractors, employment agencies, and road-cut permit holders.

Customs and Excise Bonds

Guarantee duties and taxes owed to CBSA get paid. Needed by importers, customs brokers, carriers, and bonded warehouses.

Cannabis Excise Bonds

Security a federally licensed cannabis producer posts with CRA against excise duty.

Fidelity Bonds

Protect your business from employee theft of cash, inventory, or client funds.

Lost Document Bonds

Let you replace a lost share certificate, Canada Savings Bond, or policy.

Carnet Bonds

Back an ATA Carnet so samples, show goods, or professional gear cross borders temporarily without duty.

Bidding on construction? You need a contract bond. Acting as an executor? You need an estate bond.

What Is a Commercial Surety Bond?

A commercial surety bond is a three-party guarantee that a business will meet a legal, regulatory, or financial obligation. The surety backs your promise to the party that required the bond. If you break that promise and a valid claim is paid, you repay the surety. A bond protects the obligee, not you.

ObligeeThe party that requires the bondThe provincial licensing regulator
SuretyThe company that guarantees the obligationA licensed Canadian surety

How to Read Your Bond Requirement Letter

What the letter saysWhat it means for you
Bond amount or penal sumThe most the surety will pay on claims. Your premium is a percentage of this number.
ObligeeWho the bond is made out to. The name must match the letter exactly.
Prescribed form or wordingMany regulators and CBSA require their own form. A bond on the wrong form gets rejected.
Term or effective dateWhen coverage starts. Most commercial bonds run 12 months and renew.
Filing instructionsWhere the signed original goes, and if electronic filing is allowed.

Send the letter with your quote request and we will handle each line.

How to Get a Commercial Bond

1. Send the requirement

Complete the quote form or forward the letter from the regulator, CBSA, or CRA.

2. We underwrite and shop it

A bond specialist places your file with a surety that fits the bond and your profile. Bonds over $100,000 get a full underwriting review before quoting.

3. You approve the quote

You see the premium and terms before anything is issued.

4. We issue and file the bond

You get the signed bond on the obligee’s required form. Renewal dates are tracked so your licence or account stays active.

How Much Does a Commercial Bond Cost?

You pay an annual premium, a percentage of the bond amount. The surety sets the rate based on bond type, bond amount, your credit and financials, and your time in business and claim history. Many standard licence and permit bonds carry a minimum premium. Larger customs, excise, and fidelity bonds are priced case by case.

How to keep your premium down

  • Bond the exact amount the obligee requires. Over-bonding raises your premium.
  • Send financial statements up front on larger bonds. A complete file gets priced on its merits.
  • Renew before expiry. A lapsed bond can mean a fresh application.
  • Keep every bond with one broker, so one specialist sees your full profile.

Your quote is free, with no obligation.

Commercial Bond Requirements Canadian Businesses Ask About Most

CBSA importers under CARM

The CARM transition period ended May 20, 2025. Importers who want release prior to payment now must post their own financial security with CBSA, and accounts without security were removed from the privilege (CBSA Customs Notice 25-22). A customs bond is how most importers meet this requirement.

Cannabis licensees

Federal excise rules require licensed cannabis producers to post security of at least $5,000, capped at $5 million per licence, sized to the excise duty owed (Regulations Respecting Excise Licences and Registrations, s. 5).

Already Bonded? Get a Free Bond Renewal Check

Moving a bond feels like work. It isn’t. Send your current bond and renewal notice 30 days before it expires. We review the premium, the wording, and the surety behind it, and tell you if you’re overpaying. If you’re not, we’ll say so.

Book a Bond Renewal Check if:

  • Your renewal premium went up with no claims on file
  • You found out your bond expired from the regulator, not your broker
  • Your broker takes days to answer a bond question
  • You hold bonds with several brokers and no one tracks them all

Commercial Bond FAQs

A commercial bond is a surety bond that guarantees a business will follow a law, licence condition, tax obligation, or non-construction contract. Common examples in Canada include licence and permit bonds, customs and excise bonds, fidelity bonds, lost document bonds, and carnet bonds.

No. Insurance protects you. A commercial bond protects the party that required it. If the surety pays a valid claim on your bond, you must repay the surety. That is why sureties review your credit and financials before issuing.

Standard licence and permit bonds can issue soon after a complete application. Larger customs, excise, and fidelity bonds need underwriting, so timing depends on how fast you send financials. You get a realistic timeline on the first call.

Your business name and address, the bond type and amount, and the obligee’s requirement letter. Bonds over $100,000 usually also need recent financial statements.

Yes. Most commercial bonds are annual and must stay in force while you hold the licence, permit, or account. A lapsed bond can suspend your licence or import privileges.

Yes. Send your current bond and renewal notice before it expires. The new bond takes effect when the old one ends, so there is no gap with the obligee.
